"Terrifically entertaining in a Neil Simon-on-estrogen sort of way, full of good-natured bitchery and zingers delivered with the skill and impact of Zeus hurling thunderbolts from Mt. Olympus." ~Chicago Tribune ~~~~~ "A cross between The Birdcage and A Chorus Line...you'll laugh harder than you ever remember laughing." ~Tampa Tribune |
Diva Diaries music and lyrics by John Mercurio Welcome to Pandora’s Box where the air is thick with Chanel Number Five, Lucky Strikes and the strains of Supreme harmonies. Listen closely and you’ll also hear echoes of decades of cat fighting, bitching, consoling, laughing and dreaming. Nightly, the stage of Pandora’s Box features Damsel, Randee and Clareen: three dynamic divas on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Clareen’s roots are coming in grey; Damsel’s porcelain is beginning to crack, and Randee’s five o’clock shadow is getting harder to hide. The “change of life” would be difficult enough for anyone to face, but for these three, it comes with its own special set of problems when they learn that their jobs are coming to an end. As the girls prepare for their final performance, they must come to terms with the closing of Pandora’s Box, the lurid netherworld they’ve called home for the last thirty years. As they bravely face their future, they face their pasts; they spill a secret or two and as always, infuriate and inspire one another. As they remember certain moments of their lives together, we see on stage three younger versions of themselves enact certain scenes from their past, providing insight for the present characters of what their lives have been about and perhaps what will become of them tomorrow after this chapter ends. What’s to become of our Grandes Dames? The key to their next chapter lies in the pages of their extraordinary Diva Diaries. One of the conceits of Diva Diaries is as it shows the characters performing their drag numbers throughout the 70's, 80's and 90's, it uses pop music from that period. At times, an original song is composed on top of a pre-existing one, contrapuntally combining and showing at once the character's present incarnation and his younger self. <<Back
